What do you get when you mash-up tower defence and rapid-tap? The answer is Frontier Defense! Tower defence games are usually about strategy, but with Frontier Defense it’s all about the upgrades, button mashing, and carpal tunnel.
Frontier Defense Game Play
Frontier Defense looks like your typical single wall tower defence game: your wall is on the left and creeps swarm your defences from the right side of the screen. Players can upgrade wall defences and control up to three heroes who can also be upgraded. It’s pretty basic, but the rapid-fire action will keep you hooked until you can’t tap anymore.
You can unlock new heroes with gems, where upgrades for your castle wall and unlocked heroes are purchased using coins. Coins are mostly obtained by killing creeps. Each stage has ten waves and a player generally only gains gems by completing a stage. One time bonus coins and gems can also be collected by meeting set game benchmarks or through the game’s daily spin prize.
The adrenaline-fuelled rapid tap kicks in the second you start the game. With only one hero and a low-level tower archer, it takes some fast tapping to protect your castle. Creeps rush the gates in groups, but luckily your hero cuts fast with you tapping to swing his sword. Each tap helps fill up two different metres for your hero. One metre gives your hero a special attack bonus while the other puts the hero on auto-attack so you can give your hand a rest, or control a second and third hero.
Watch for exclamations marks to appear at the top and bottom of your screen. The exclamations at the top either signify that you can spin the prize wheel or that you’ve reached an achievement. The game also tells you when you’ve earned enough coins or gems to buy an upgrade with exclamation marks along the bottom of the screen.
Frontier Defense Free and Pay Options
Frontier Defense is 100% free to play with small pay options. Pay options range from $1.19CAD to $22.99CAD. You can buy additional gems, a double coin modifier, or the occasional special booster pack when they are offered.
Frontier Defense is super-fun and if you’re into button mashers, I highly recommend it.
